  About Us

San Angelo's Radio Station, KPEP, was certainly one of the most classic radio call signs in West Texas music history. Starting in the early 1950's, KPEP in San Angelo became the first full-time country music radio station in America. By the Fall of 1954, KPEP Radio began adding some 'rock-a-billy' records to their all Country Music format. Then, on a Wednesday night, January 5th, 1955, Joe Treadway of KPEP Radio booked a little known 19 year old singer named ELVIS PRESLEY into a show at the San Angelo Municipal Auditorium at City Hall.

Elvis, Scotty Moore and Bill Black played that first show in San Angelo together with Billy Walker, Jimmy and Johnny, along with Peach Seed Jones (Tillman Franks) completing the lineup. What followed that debut in San Angelo, was a frenetic barnstorm of some two dozen shows across Western Texas in 1955, from which Elvis established himself as a live performer. It was over a year later before the whole country would learn who Elvis was, when “Heartbreak Hotel" would hit #1 on both, the Country and Pop Music Charts.

In 1955 West Texas was my hottest territory.” — Elvis Presley

Those events in 1955 created a template, from which almost every Major American Music Artist, both Country and Pop, owed much of their initial success to being played FIRST in West Texas on KPEP Radio… including; Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Naylor, the Cavaliers, the Bobby Fuller Four, Sonny James, Faron Young, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Bill Anderson, Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, and many more.

"I saw Elvis in Odessa in 1955 for the first time...Even in the early days Elvis almost always stole the show from the headliners. Nobody wanted to follow Elvis Presley."

— Roy Orbison
